Doctor-led weight management

Weight loss treatment, supervised by a doctor

Talk to an Irish GP about medical weight management. If treatment is right for you, it follows a full assessment and comes with ongoing review — not handed out on a form.

Consultations from €34.99.

How it works

What doctor-led weight management involves

What suits you depends on your health, your history and what you can realistically stick with. Your doctor works that out with you.

A full medical assessment

An Irish GP reviews your health, your history, your BMI and anything else you currently take, and discusses what you have already tried. Nothing is decided before that conversation.

A plan built around you

If treatment is appropriate, your doctor explains the options that suit your circumstances and agrees a plan with you, alongside changes to diet and activity.

Reviewed as you go

You are reviewed as you progress, so your plan is adjusted while it is working and stopped or changed if it is not. Continuing is never automatic.

Treatment is decided by your doctor after a clinical assessment. No treatment is guaranteed, and your doctor may recommend a different approach.

Eligibility

Who this is for

Doctor-led weight management suits people who meet certain criteria. As a general guide:

  • You are 18 or over.
  • Your BMI is generally 30 or above, or 27 or above alongside a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.
  • You are able to give an accurate medical history, including anything else you currently take.
  • You are willing to combine treatment with changes to diet and activity — treatment works alongside those, not instead of them.

These are guidelines, not a checklist that entitles you to treatment. Your doctor makes the final decision based on your full medical picture.

Ongoing care

Treatment is reviewed, not just repeated

Full assessment first

Your medical history, anything else you currently take, your BMI and any related conditions are reviewed before any treatment is approved.

Treatment builds up gradually

Treatment is supplied in stages. You are reviewed between stages, so it only steps up when it is safe to do so.

Stop or change at any point

If treatment is not suiting you, or is not working, your doctor will change the plan. Continuing is never automatic.

Important safety information

Weight management treatment is not suitable for everyone. It is not appropriate during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and it can interact with other things you take or be unsuitable alongside certain conditions. Tell your doctor about everything you take, including anything bought over the counter.

Never buy weight loss products from an unregulated online seller. Anything sold without a proper medical assessment may be counterfeit, wrongly supplied or unsafe. If you experience severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or any reaction that worries you, seek medical attention promptly.

Questions

Common questions

Is treatment guaranteed?

No. A doctor assesses whether weight management treatment is clinically appropriate and safe for you. They may decline, ask for more information, or recommend a different approach. You are not charged for treatment that is not issued.

What will my treatment involve?

That depends on your assessment. Your doctor explains the options that suit your circumstances, how the programme is structured and what happens at each review. Specific treatments are discussed with you in the consultation, not advertised on a web page.

Are there side effects?

Any treatment carries some risk, and some effects are more common at the start. Your doctor goes through the risks relevant to you, what to look out for, and what to do if something does not feel right.

How much weight will I lose?

That varies a great deal between individuals and depends as much on diet, activity and consistency as on the treatment itself. Your doctor will discuss what is realistic for you rather than quote a figure.

Why does treatment build up gradually?

Starting low and building up is how weight management treatment is intended to be used. It gives your body time to adjust and limits side effects, which is why it is supplied in stages with a review in between.

Do I need to keep seeing a doctor?

Yes. Weight management is provided with ongoing review. You are reassessed before treatment continues or steps up, so that it is still working and still appropriate for you.
